ISO 9001:2015 Transition to ISO 9001:2026

On 16 September 2026, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published ISO 9001:2026, the latest edition of the world's leading Quality Management Systems (QMS) standard. The revised standard is designed to help organizations strengthen quality management, enhance organizational resilience, improve decision-making, and deliver consistent value to customers.

Key Updates in ISO 9001:2026

The revised standard maintains the established QMS framework while introducing several important enhancements, including:

  • Stronger emphasis on leadership, quality culture, and ethical behaviour.
  • Clearer requirements for identifying and addressing risks and opportunities to support effective decision-making.
  • Improved clarity and usability to help organizations better understand and apply the requirements.
  • Enhanced alignment between quality management, organizational objectives, and strategic direction.
  • Improved integration with other ISO management system standards through the Harmonized Structure (HS).

Benefits of the Updated Standard

  • Organizations will have a clearer framework for managing quality, improving processes, and delivering consistent products and services.
  • Improved alignment with evolving customer expectations, stakeholder needs, and business requirements.
  • Stronger leadership accountability and a greater focus on fostering a culture of quality throughout the organization.
  • More effective identification of risks and opportunities to support continual improvement and informed decision-making.
  • Greater consistency and compatibility with other ISO management system standards, facilitating the integration of multiple management systems.

Transition Requirements

Organizations currently certified to ISO 9001:2015 are required to transition to ISO 9001:2026 within the established transition period.

The transition period is expected to be 36 months from the publication date of ISO 9001:2026, with all organizations required to complete the transition no later than 30 September 2029. Certificates issued to ISO 9001:2015 will remain valid during the transition period, subject to applicable certification requirements and transition arrangements.

Organizations are encouraged to begin reviewing the revised requirements and planning their transition activities as early as possible to ensure a smooth and timely migration to ISO 9001:2026.
